Laser Hair Removal

Whether for hygienic or cosmetic reasons, the patient who is tired of temporary, often painful methods of removing unwanted hair may welcome laser and intense pulsed light hair removal with relief.

Lasers produce highly focused, intense beams of light that are absorbed by dark pigments in the hair follicles beneath the skin?s surface and converted to heat, destroying the follicles and preventing hair growth for up to two years. Multiple treatments are required for complete hair removal -- the follicle must be "active" at the time of treatment, and not all follicles are active at the same time. Treatments are needle-free and do not require anesthesia. Most patients feel nothing more than a slight sting like the snap of a rubber band.

It is possible that some hair will grow back, though it is usually finer and lighter than what was originally removed. There may also be some redness and swelling following the procedure.

Laser Hair Removal Pre-Treatment Instructions

  • Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
  • Shave all areas to be treated on the day of treatment. If you have difficulty shaving, you can schedule an appointment to be shaved. For women - facial hair may be clipped with small scissors if you're uncomfortable with shaving.
  • Please do not wax, pluck or bleach the hair for one month prior to treatment. The hair follicle needs to be present for effective treatment. You may shave.
  • Numbing cream should be applied 30 minutes prior to treatment. Apply a thin layer of cream to area, but do not rub in completely, then cover with plastic wrap.
  • No sun exposure or use of tanning products for 4-6 weeks before or during the full course of therapy. Sun protection with sunscreen (at least SPF 30), protective clothing and sunglasses are essential prior to, in-between and following your series of treatments. If you are currently tan, you will need to postpone your first treatment.
  • Avoid aspirin, Advil or Motrin or any other aspirin containing products for at least one week prior to procedure. This will help minimize possible bruising.
  • Discontinue use of Retin-A and Hydroquinone (if treating face), Tetracycline, or Minocin three days prior to all treatments.
  • No new medications should be taken for at least two weeks prior to treatment. Please notify Ageless if you must take a new medication prior to treatment.
If you have a history of cold sores (herpes) and are receiving treatment around the mouth, we recommend that you take Valtrex during your therapy. Please notify Palm Beach Life Extension if you need a prescription for this condition. If you have a current prescription, Valtrex 500mg should be taken by mouth twice daily on the day before, the day of and the day after treatment.

Laser Hair Removal After Care Instructions

  • Treat your skin gently - do not scrub, scratch or pick at the treated area.
  • When washing the treated area, use a gentle, mild soap for the next 2-3 days. Do not use a washcloth or loofah on the treated area and pat skin dry.
  • Avoid any creams or lotions, which contain alpha hydroxy or glycolic acid for 3 days after treatment. Many anti-aging and acne products contain these acids, please check the ingredients of your products.
  • You may shave the treated area, but NO plucking, waxing or bleaching. Remember, it takes 2-3 weeks for the treated hair to fall out, so be patient.
  • Avoid hot showers, baths, hot tubs for at least 24 hours after treatment.
  • Ideally, you should stay out of the sun throughout the course of treatment. If you are planning a vacation in the sun, wear protective clothing and sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). If you become tan, wait until your tan fades before your next treatment (at least one month).

Reactions to watch for and what to do:

  • Skin may be red with small "bumps" immediately following the treatment. Your skin may feel like it has a slight sunburn. This can last a few minutes to a few days after treatment. You may use ice packs and cold aloe vera gel to soothe skin.
  • If you experience itching, you may use over-the-counter topical hydrocortisone lotion or cream.
  • If you experience increased pain, textural changes (blistering or fluid erupts), or skin becomes tender to touch, call Ageless immediately for further directions or make an appointment to be seen right away.
  • If light scabbing or crusting occurs, apply a topical antibiotic ointment, such as Bacitracin or Neosporin as directed.
