BOTOX? and Other Cosmetic Injectable Fillers

Dr. Godfrey performs and is an instructor for the all of the most advanced aesthetic techniques including upper and lower face BOTOX? and fillers for the entire face including Restylane?, Captique?, Hylaform, Cosmoplast?/ Cosmoderm? and Sculptra? to add overall volume to thin, sagging skin. BOTOX? Cosmetic is a protein commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow's feet, frown and worry lines, and lines on the neck. BOTOX? injections block nerve impulses, weakening muscles to relax wrinkles and give the face a rejuvenated look. BOTOX? may also be useful for migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and eye and neck muscle spasms. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein found in the second layer of skin (the dermis) which "plumps up" the skin, joints, bones and ligaments. Injections counteract the effects of gravity, sun exposure and years of facial muscle movement by filling out sunken areas and smoothing lines for a rejuvenated look. Results may begin to fade in a few months, depending on the patient?s age, genetic background, skin quality, lifestyle and body site. Because of this, and because injections cannot improve severe wrinkles or deep folds, the procedure is often combined with facial resurfacing or plastic surgery for more a satisfying and longer-lasting outcome.

BOTOX? Pre-treatment Instructions

It is prudent to follow some simple guidelines before treatment that can make all the difference between a fair and great result, by reducing some possible side effects associated with the injections. We realize that this is not always possible. However, minimizing these risks is always desirable.

  1. Avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (Alcohol may thin the blood increasing risk of bruising.
  2. Avoid anti-inflammatory / blood thinning medications ideally, for a period of two (2) weeks before treatment.
Medications and supplements such as Aspirin, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John?s Wort, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Vioxx, and other NSAIDS are all blood thinning and can increase the risk of bruising/swelling after injections.
  3. Schedule a BOTOX? appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event which may be occurring, i.e., wedding, vacation, etc. It is not desirable to have a very special event occurring and be bruised from an injection which could have been avoided.
BOTOX? Post-Treatment Instructions

Please follow these instructions carefully after each Botox? treatment: As you leave the office, you might notice some slight swelling but it should cease within a few hours. For the next 4 hours, you need to keep your head and neck completely upright. Do not bend over, lay down flat or place your head against a pillow. Allow at least 4 hours to pass before touching, pressing or manipulating the treated areas. You may notice some slight bruising for a couple of days. This is common and it will gradually disappear. You may cover the area with makeup if you like. You may go home or return to work and resume your daily activities. Moderate exercise can be done after your treatment. Please be patient, for results are not immediately apparent. You may notice some changes in 3-5 days and complete effects are not realized for up to 2 weeks. When you return we will evaluate the progress of today's treatment. Some people may need an additional touch-up treatment to be sure that all of the treated muscles are adequately weakened.
